MPEG-2 是DVB視頻、音頻和傳輸的基礎。但是，MPEG-2規范并不提供確保互操作性、數據廣播和在一個電視系統中的真正調度遞交所需要的全部信息。因此，DVB定義了在DVB里實現MPEG-2的一套指南（TR 101 154），覆蓋了基線SDTV、HDTV和專業DVB IRD的互操作性的最小需求。
此外，DVB還擴展MPEG-2系統規范（ISO/IEC 13818-1）成為一個完全的信息服務（Service Information）規范（DVB-SI）。
數據廣播是數字電視的一個關鍵應用，DVB采用了MPEG-2數字存儲介質-命令和控制（DSM-CC，Digital Storage Media - Command and Control）的元素并產生了規范和指南，這些現在是世界上大多數數據廣播應用的基礎。

9. 子字幕（Subtitling）
DVB子字幕規范是一個位映射（bit-mapped）子字幕系統，能夠攜帶比模擬系統多很多的復雜信息，例如位映射的標識語等。它支持所有廣泛使用的語言，是世界上許多數字TV應用的奠基石。
